• Full Name: Melvin Curtis Dryer (Mel, Daddy and Papa) • Date of Death: December 11, 2019, Vancouver, Washington • Date and Place of Birth: March 5, 1938, Hermiston, Oregon • Parents: William (Bill) and Mattie Dryer • Education: Franklin High School, Portland, Oregon; IBEW Electrical Apprenticeship School, Portland, Oregon, 4 years, acquiring his Journeyman Electrical License • Military: Joined US Army while continuing his apprenticeship school to earn his Journeyman license. He served with the 162nd Engineer Battalion, Company D, Specialist 4, from November 1960 to November of 1963. • Employment: Dryer & Sons Electric,a family owned business, doing residential and commercial work from 1961 to retirement in April 1998 • Memberships and Clubs: IBEW Local 48 and The Foursquare Church • Hobbies: Avid hunter and fisherman. Deer, Elk, Antelope, waterfowl and upland game and an excellent shot. Enjoyed doing his own reloading for the next hunting trips. Fishing for salmon, steelhead, and trout. Taking his wife and family whenever possible. He always planted a garden, especially large ones whenever space was available. • Something Special About the Person: He taught his children the value of hard work and taking pride in doing your work well. A great electrician. He also taught his children, if you want something, you have to work for it. Good manners, especially at the dinner table were essential. He was always busy with projects. Liked a clean car, especially the windows and a clean garage. He was a generous man. He was also neat and clean in his appearance. Carried a chapstick and handkerchief in his pockets and band-aid in his wallet. Loved his wife, children and grandchildren. All the girls in his family were called " Sugar". His sons were instructed to always wear a belt and fingernails were not to look like "clam digger sweethearts," in other words, dirty. Mel took up skiing in his 40s and loved to ski fast downhill. Also, took up golf after retirement and enjoyed the game, most of the time. Also became an avid reader, especially history. If he read a book, you needn't read it because he would tell you all about it. Reading his Bible and attending church were very important to him. • Survivors: Wife of 58 years, Joanne; Sons David, Scott and Brad Dryer and daughter, Nicole Dryer; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren; brothers Peter and Garry Dryer; Sister, Lorelei Garrison; several nieces and nephews • Loved Ones Who Died Before: Brothers Dale and Everett, Sisters Jean, Evelyn and Lannie
