Mary Electa Hittle

Mary E. Hittle, 92, passed away on ursday, September 26, 2013, at home in Portland, OR, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Jewell and David Dixon. Mary E. Hittle (Darnell) was born in Lander, WY, on September 11, 1921. She attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY. Mary taught school in a one-room schoolhouse and on various ranches. At one ranch, she met and married Henry (Slim) C. Hittle, Jr. Mary worked as cook on some of the ranches Slim rode for, like the K Cross and the Pitchfork. The Hittles moved to Sifton, WA, in 1960. Mary taught for the Vancouver Head Start program until she and Slim started the M & S Bookkeeping and Tax Service, at 13001 NE Fourth Plain Blvd. Mary and Slim were leaders in Toppers 4H club, active in the Vancouver Moose Lodge and Pinochle Club. They continued the bookkeeping service until Slim's death in 1979. Mary returned to her love of teaching, by volunteering at the Columbia Ridge Baptist Academy in southeast Vancouver. She was a member of the Brush Prairie Baptist Church. Mary enjoyed playing all kinds of gamescard games, board games or dice games. She was an avid reader of Louis L' Amour books. Mary enjoyed taking pictures of flowers and of nature, as well as of members of her beloved family and friends. Mary is survived by her five children, Calvin Hittle of Vancouver, Kenneth Hittle of Portland, Jewell Dixon (Hittle) of Portland, Paul Hittle of Battle Ground, Marylou Nye (Hittle) of Spokane and by her brother Jack Darnell of Jeffery City, WY. Mary is also survived by 7 grand children, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. A viewing will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013, from 12:30-9 p.m. at the Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 NE 112th Ave, Vancouver, WA. An additional viewing will be held on Saturday, October 5, from 1:30-2:30 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. A reception will follow in the Hospitality Room. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either her home church, Brush Prairie Baptist Church, 11814 NE 117th Ave., Vancouver, WA 98662, or her favorite charity, The Salvation Army, Clark County Coordination, PO Box 5559, Vancouver, WA 98668.
