Joy Ann Schmoldt

Joy R. Schmoldt Joy passed away peacefully on October 3, 2017 in Vancouver Washington. She was born in Shelby, Iowa to Clarence and Bernice Ries on February 3, 1933. She is survived by her two children, David and Diane (and Diane's husband, Rich), six grandchildren (and the spouses of those who are married) and six (with one on the way) great grandchildren. Besides living in Shelby, over her lifetime she lived in a variety of places including Greeley CO, Salt Lake City UT, Alhambra CA, San Gabriel CA, Irvine CA, Camas WA and Vancouver WA. Joy was deeply committed to education having received her bachelor's degree from UCLA and her master's degree from Cal State Los Angeles. She chose education as her life's vocation and taught at Alhambra High School, San Gabriel High School, and Mt. San Antonio College. Joy's passion was being a mother. In her own words "she loved being a mother." Indeed, she was a very loving and supportive parent who provided an enriched and diverse childhood for her children. Known as "Grandma Joy," she loved and was so proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She set a wonderful example by seeking things that are virtuous, lovely and praiseworthy. Joy was known for her cheerful, joyful disposition--her name was so fitting! She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. She did family history research on her family lines and helped others with theirs as a volunteer in the Family History Library. She provided emotional support for women who were diagnosed with breast cancer and volunteered at the School for the Blind. Over the years, Joy had the opportunity to travel to Hawaii, Mexico, Jamaica, Canada, and Austria. She made numerous trips in the U.S. enjoying historical sites and national parks, with Yosemite being the preeminent. Joy's final resting place will be next to her mother at Rose Hills in Whittier CA. Donations can be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, the Smithsonian Institute or the charity of your choice. When you see the color of the Fall leaves, the beauty of waterfalls, the mountains, the coastline, and sunsets, please know Joy loved these things too.
