Jacques Antoine Germain

Jacques Germain, 69, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 19th, 2014 of natural causes. He was born in Algeria on July 3rd, 1945. Jacques, born to French parents, traveled extensively during his youth with his father who worked in public administration for the French government. He lived with his family in several remote French colonies. Along the way he learned many languages. He initially came to the United States as a high school exchange student. He liked the US so much that he returned after earning his college degree in France at The University of Toulouse. Upon his return he settled in Spartanburg, S.C., where he met the love of his life, Carolyn Wells Walker. They married a short while later and started a journey that lasted 45 years. Along this journey, they stopped in Chapel Hill, N.C., where Jacques earned his PhD in Romance Languages, his first love. During his doctoral studies, Jacques and Carolyn welcomed the birth of their only child, their son, Sean Germain. Jacques worked as a professor of languages at several colleges, the last of which was Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida. As computer technology evolved, so did Jacques' interest. This interest led to work as a software developer. He ended his career as a manager with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in Jacksonville Florida, from which he retired. When Sean and his family relocated to Portland, Oregon in the Fall of 2012, Jacques and Carolyn decided to start the next great adventure in their life and followed them to Oregon. They took up residence just accross the river from Portland in Vancouver, WA. Jacques enjoyed time with his grandchildren and learning new gardening and lawncare techniques. These were the best days of his life. They were just settling into their new home when Jacques passed peacefully in the night. Jacques was always curious, intensely involved in his work and his family. His family was his whole life and he will be sorely missed by his family, his many friends. Jacques was predeceased by his parents, Pierre Germain and Helene Germain. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Germain, his son and daughter-in-law Sean and Maureen Germain and his three grandchildren, Ashleigh, Reagan, and Kevin. He is also survived by his two brothers Daniel Germain and Jean- Louis Germain.
