Albert Francis Laurie

Albert Al Francis Laurie of Vancouver WA, age 93 took his last flight through the clouds to heaven on June 17, 2018. Al, loving husband of Marlene Laurie, passed away at his home with his wife by his side. Al was born July 8, 1924 in Wichita, KS. His parents moved the family to Hillsboro, Oregon after their farm in Kansas was destroyed by the Dust Bowl. From Hillsboro the family moved to McMinnville where Al graduated from high school.. After high school graduation Al joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and was stationed on the Aleutians Islands as a fighter pilot, flying P38s, P40s, and P51s. After WWII ended Al returned to Oregon, joined the Air Force Reserves, graduated from OSU College of Engineering and began his business career. During the 40 years before retirement in 2000, Al, together with his brother Charley Laurie owned Gender Machine Wks., Metaltronics, Edwards Pump Co, A-C Valve Co and Pacific Shredder and they were entrepreneurs before their time designing and building machinery to recycle tires and compact hay bales. Al was always encouraging family members to become employed at least temporarily at one of the companies to help family grasp the concept of business opportunities and become entrepreneurs. Al was a member of the a Masonic Lodge in Portland, a Shriner and supporter of the Shrine Hospital in Portland, a former Wing Commander of the Oregon Wing Civil Air Patrol, a volunteer pilot for the Multnomah County Deputy Sheriffs, a member of the International Aerobatic Club Oregon Chapter, a member of the Quiet Birdmen, and various Military Officer Associations. Al is survived by his wife, Marlene, sister Mary Jane Coppinger of Gresham Oregon, six nieces and nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his sons Bradford Laurie and Richard Laurie, his sister Shirley Ann Jackson and his brother Charley Dan Laurie. Al Laurie will be inurned at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland Oregon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home Hospice at the Peace Health Foundation in Vancouver, WA or Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, Oregon. Al will be forever missed but never forgotten.
