Phyllis E. Roth

Phyllis Eleanor Roth, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the age of 91. Phyllis attended Enterprise Elementary School and graduated from Ridgefield High School in 1943. She attended Northwest Nazarene College. During the war, Phyllis worked in the shipyards and for the U.S. Government in the finance department. She also worked at Sears in downtown Vancouver and for a short time she was a nanny. Beginning in 1959, she and her husband Bud were foster parents to a total of 35 newborn babies. She cared for them in her home until they were adopted. She had one special baby girl, Marie, until she was almost two. The heartache was great when Marie left and was felt by all the family. What joy, when 36 years later, we were reunited! She was very close to her brother Al and sister Evie. Phyllis and Evie married brothers and raised their families side by side on the Roth dairy farm. Phyllis loved to travel the U.S. visiting many states, including Alaska and several trips to the Hawaiian Islands. She tended her garden well into her 80s canning dozens of jars of green beans and freezing bags of corn. She was known for her pies and no one could make a pie crust like her. She loved sports. Over a period of 42 basketball seasons, she had gone to, listened to or watched every single Portland Trailblazers game. Of course, she also was a big fan of the Seahawks and Mariners. Phyllis's children, grandchildren and great grandchildren knew God had blessed them with someone special. She was a joy, always positive, never complained, always thankful. She is the reason the family's faith is so strong by showing them what Jesus' love looks like. They will miss her jokes; she was always making everyone laugh. She put everyone else's needs before her own, always making sure everyone's stomachs were full. Yearly trips to the beach are some of the grandchildren's favorite memories with lots of her good food and endless card and board games. We will hold our precious memories close to our hearts and most importantly remember to love God and love others the way "Grandma" did through her lifetime. Our goal is to honorably carry on the legacy she left behind.
