Orville Elwood Cummings

Orville E. Cummings passed away on November 7, 2010, surrounded by his family. He was 86 years old. He will be remembered as a loving father, a caring grandfather, and a kind and happy man. Orville was known for his great sense of humor and his sunny attitude. He was a delight to be around especially if you had a bad day. Being a great problem solver, he could see the bright side of any bad situation. You can picture him with his hearty laugh, and a cup of coffee. Always black, with no sugar and cream. Orville's full life began February 16, 1924 in Mitchell, South Dakota. He came to the Pacific Northwest to find work in the ship yards. After serving in the Navy during World War II he traveled to Vancouver, Washington. He planted his roots in Vancouver, making it his home where he married, and raised his wonderful family. He pursued an education, first earning an Associates Degree from Clark College, then earning a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the University of Portland, as well as a Masters degree in Business Education from Oregon State University. He brought out the best in each of his students, and was a favorite teacher of many. Even years later, students still approached him, and related happy memories. After his retirement in 1982, Orville was never one to sit still. He enjoyed traveling, being a generous volunteer, and was an avid reader. One of his favorite hobbies was entering contests. And, he won quite a few! Some of his happiest times he enjoyed were winning a trip to Hawaii, a big screen TV, and a house full of other prizes. Orville enjoyed working hard with his hands. He was proud of the time he spent working on and managing his rental properties, where he became a jack of all trades. Friends and family always held a special place in his life. Orville regularly spent time with his former work associates and lunch partners. He also enjoyed visiting with "the guys" at Club Green Meadows, where he exercised and enjoyed socializing. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Gloria; and his two children: Janet and her husband John Lutes, and Owen and his wife Iris. Orville is also survived by his three grandchildren: Marc, and his wife Karissa, Jared, and his wife Elisabeth, and Nicholas Atwood, all of Vancouver.
