Michael Shaw

Michael Shaw was born 8/20/1938 in Forest Grove, OR to Rose Marolyn Woodward and Wayne Robert Shaw. Michael married his second wife Anita Douglass on 10/19/1991. He passed away peacefully at home from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis on 4/29/2017 with Anita and two of his step children by his side, but all of his children and grandchildren close by in mind and heart. Michael was father to one son and one daughter, four step sons and two stepdaughters and Papa to 17 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. After high school, Michael served four years in the Coast Guard and was honorably discharged in June of 1960. He worked in banking / savings and loan and human resources during his career, retiring from Portland General Electric in 2003 after a 17 year career in human resources with that company. At the time of his passing, he had been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 42 years. Michael had many responsibilities in the Church during those years. He served in the Portland Temple and as a missionary in the Arkansas Little Rock Mission with Anita. The calling that he enjoyed the most was teaching, but he loved serving his "Beloved Savior" most of all where ever he was called and needed. Michael had many hobbies and interests over the years sports, especially golf and basketball, cars, collecting basketball cards, photography, model airplanes, woodworking, ceramics, building a garden railroad, guitars and music, collecting guns, HAM radio, family history and geneology. Some of these hobbies would come and go but animals were always a constant love and interest especially dogs, horses and birds. He had a farm and horse arena in Albany OR for four years. During that time he worked in 4H teaching the kids to ride and jump horses. When he retired he volunteered at the Clark County Humane Society for a number of years. Michael had a knack for making friends and had many diverse friendships. He expressed sincere personal interest in the people in his life, whether long-time friends or people he had just met. Subtle humor was an important, engaging part of his personality. His family was an integral part of his life and included: Darren Shaw (Debbie) and their children Devin and Derik. Kimberly Shaw Leece (Jerry) and their children Danny and Melody ( who preceded her grandfather in death 17 years ago.) Greg Douglass. Phil Douglass (Kimra) and their children Derek, Mason, York and Bethany. Michael Douglass (JoAnn) and their children Courtney Douglass Newman(Patrick) and their daughter Audrey and Maren Douglass Quakenbush (Paul). Chaundra Douglass Cammack ( John) and their children Allison, Katherine, Nathan and Ian. Erik Douglass. Jennifer Douglass Gunn (Briant) and their children Sarah, Megan, and Abigail. Michael's funeral will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 13600 SE McGillivray Blvd Vancouver WA. There will be a viewing at the Evergreen Memorial Gardens Chapel 1101 NE 112th Ave. Vancouver on May 5, from 5-9 p.m and at the Church prior to the funeral from 9:30 10:15 a.m. Special thanks to Noel Guzman MD, John Fowler MD and David A. Smith MD and their staffs, Peace Health Hospice and to family and friends who have been so loving and supportive during the last almost 3 years of Michael's declining health. Michael's interment will take place at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Portland, OR. If desired, donations can be made to the Clark County Humane Society .
