Melvin L. Frostad

Melvin L. Frostad of Vancouver, Washington passed away on July 7th, 2022 peacefully in his sleep. He was 86 years old. Melvin was born to parents Thelma and John Frostad on August 24th, 1935, on the family farm just north of Marcus, WA. He was number 12 in a family of 13 siblings. Being from a big family, Melvin learned the importance of togetherness, love, and doing your part. In his youth, Melvin played guitar in a country band called the Golden Mountain Boys. The other members of the band were his brothers Walt, Harold, Johnny, and his nephew Roy. Eventually, Melvin's wife Dixie sang vocals. The Golden Mountain boys played covers and originals at grange halls and school dances, and they even had a spot on the local radio station. Although the brothers slowly moved apart, every year they gathered together to play at the annual Frostad family reunion. It was the big event of the summer and a memory cherished by all who heard them play, even those forced to get on stage to sing along. The Golden Mountain Boys in Barstow, "We'll Come Around!" Melvin worked on the family farm for many years before working on the Great Northern Railroad, in an aluminum plant, a sawmill, and as a forest fire lookout. He later graduated from Eastern Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts in Education, and later received a Masters of Teaching in Physical Science from Idaho State University. Melvin taught industrial arts and math for many years, while also coaching track, football, and basketball. He touched the hearts and minds of many students as both a teacher and a principal. Anyone lucky enough to be brought under Melvin's wing would tell you that he was a stern guy, but also a big softie where it counted. Melvin was a man who loved working with his hands, whether it was crafting guitars and furniture, refinishing cars, or playing his guitar. But above all, he treasured his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who left a lasting legacy on the importance of hard work, making time for loved ones, and passing on your gifts. Melvin is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Dixie May (Dobson) Frostad, his 4 children,( Melodie, Kevin, Tracy and Katrina), 16 grandchildren (Kristen, Robin, Luke, Justin, Jennifer, Alex, Whitney, Macy, Haley, Nicholas, Madison, Emily, Ryan, Samantha, Lily, and Hunter, and 5 soon-to-be 6 great grandchildren (Keenan, London, Redding, Theia, Finley, Avery, and Austin. Willow is expected in September. A celebration of life will be held in honor of Melvin on July 22nd, 2022 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 NE 112th Avenue, Vancouver, WA 98684, at 12:30 in the afternoon.
