John R. Marcus

John Richard Marcus (ne' Markouc) 79, of Vancouver, Washington passed away peacefully at his home on June 14, 2022, with his wife and two children at his side. John was born on January 30, 1943, in Cleveland, OH to Joseph and Alice Markouc. He was educated in the Euclid, OH area and his childhood friends still called him every Christmas. He joined the U.S. Navy on January 27, 1961 and served proudly on the USS Coral Sea. Upon returning to Cleveland, he served a short stint on the PR Railroad before beginning a 37-year career with the Parker Hannifin Corporation. During his time in industrial sales, he made many lifelong friends, both at Parker and the many companies he represented; knowing the relationship was more important than the product. John's career with Parker provided him with the opportunity to meet many wonderful people and support what he loved most and lived for, his family. His career moved him from Cleveland to the farmlands of Illinois and Iowa to work in agricultural sales. While in Illinois, he met and married his soulmate of more than 46 years, Midge Marcus (nee' Flaherty). Another career move in 1985 brought him "home" to Washington State and to the beautiful Pacific Northwest. John enjoyed his career in sales, but his true calling was being a husband and father to Johnna Marcus Schafer (Jack) and Joe Marcus (Daja); and ultimately grandfather or "POP" to Bennett and Davis Marcus. John was blessed with having time to enjoy his beautiful mother, Alice who lived to her 97 th year, and his lovely sisters, Jan Tilly and Kathy Neylon. He grieved the loss of his dynamic brother and best friend, Robert Markouc in 1998. John always made time for his favorite form of relaxation, golf. He loved the game, played many of America's greatest courses, and never forgot a shot. Through golf John was able to enjoy friends, make new ones, and introduce youngsters to his passion. His patience and natural skills lead many youngsters to learn to love and excel at the sport. John Marcus was an honorable man who made friends wherever his journey took him. He leaves behind a family and many friends that will miss his quick smile, playful spirit, and the inevitable story he had yet to tell.
