John W. Hocking

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John W. Hocking, on April 29, 2022. John peacefully left us at the age of 84 and joined our heavenly Father at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, Washington with his beautiful and devoted wife by his side. John was born April 5, 1938 to Richard and Marcella Hocking in Fargo, North Dakota. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Casselton, North Dakota in 1955 John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country as a Lance Corporal for three years and was awarded the good conduct medal for his service. Following his honorable discharge, John began his career with Dakota Plate Glass, Inc. in North Dakota as a glazier. In 1961, John met and fell madly in love with the woman who would become his wife, Irene. They eloped on July 11, 1963 in South Dakota and spent the next sixty-one wonderful years together building a life filled with precious memories and sharing the adventure of faith, hope, and love. After moving to Vancouver, Washington John continued his career as a glazier with the Glaziers Local 740 while he and Irene began to grow their family- welcoming their first daughter in 1969. Family was everything to John and over the years, he and Irene were blessed with three daughters and one son. Their marriage was inspiring, stood the test of time, and reflected the beauty of God's gift of enduring love. John Wendell Hocking was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and loyal friend. He was a man that left a lasting impression on everyone he met and infused determination and courage into everything he did. John had a kind soul and was always there when it mattered most- to celebrate, to have your back, and often to partake in a good laugh. A man who was resilient, humble, compassionate, honorable, and witty with a stubborn streak. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, wood working in his shop, reading, western movies, traveling with his wife, and spending quality time with family. John is survived in legacy by his wife, Irene Hocking; his children, Patricia Hebert, Marisa Chick, Susan Hocking, and Brian Hocking; his grandchildren, Amanda Hocking, Cameron Foster, Amber Dailey, Savannah Chick, Olivia and Caleb Plamondon; great grandchildren, Hadley Hocking, Carter Foster, and Elouise Foster; sisters and brothers, Kathryn McGuire, Mary Hocking, Barbara Olson, Patrick Hocking, Marilyn Johnson, Donna Siverson, and Craig Hocking; and longtime friends. A graveside service, with military honors will be held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, located at 1101 NE 112th Avenue Vancouver, Washington 98684 on Monday May 16th for immediate family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association in memory of John.
