John Joseph Heniges

John was the last surviving and youngest son of Michael and Elizabeth Heniges. They were immigrants from Hungary, arriving at Ellis Island and then proceeding to the Pacific NW to raise their five children. John was the only member of his immediate family to go to college, becoming a pharmacist after graduating from Oregon State University. He was a lifelong Beavers fan. He married his first wife, Ruth Fletcher, a nurse, in 1958. They welcomed their eldest daughter, Lisa, in 1961, closely followed by Matthew in 1962. Their youngest, Laura, was born in 1965. John was an attentive father who enjoyed spending weekends with his children hiking, coaching, and visiting his family. Every Sunday saw him at his parent’s home in the company of his sisters, brother, and their children. Family was very important to John. He sent much of his time working in gardens with his family or playing a mean game of cribbage. After Ruth passed away in 1990, John was blessed with a second wife, marrying Linda Maxwell in 1992. He added two additional daughters through Linda, Amy and Jenny, along with their brother Darrin. After grandchildren arrived, John often focused on the routines of their lives. He loved going to their sporting events and he rarely missed a baseball game, football game, or swim meet. It was such a privilege for his grandchildren to have a Papa that would go white water rafting with them. His humor was always a part of who he was, kindly teasing the kids and family. John and Linda shared many happy hours gardening. Roses, fushias, mandavillas, dahlias, bleeding hearts, columbines, hydrangeas – so many types of flowers flourished under their care. As John’s health and stamina waned, Linda moved into the role of caregiver, making sure that her love was demonstrated in countless acts of kindness. John is survived by all three of his children. Eldest daughter Lisa Duvall, her children Andy and Kate with husband Mitchell, along with their children Sandra, Verity, and Maddy. Middle son Matthew Heniges and wife Meridyth with their children Nolan and Eva. Youngest daughter Laura Janini with husband Robert and their two sons. Cole with wife Rachel, who have three boys Wyatt, Elias, and Amos, as well as Conner and wife Olivia.
