John W. Barnett

It is with the deepest sorrow and heartbreak that we announce the death of our beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, John William Barnett. His good, valuable and wonderful life was taken when he was senselessly and violently killed while he was at his place of employment in Clackamas, OR. This crime is being investigated by the Clackamas Sheriff's Office. John was a strong Christian and loved the Lord. He was honest, and treated people fairly. John was born at the Portland Air Base in 1961 to Robert J. Barnett and Sharon L. Hamilton Barnett. They were a US Navy Family. In his early years he lived in Alameda, CA. In 1966 he moved to Guam where he started school in the Village of Agat. His father was transferred to Guam for two years then the family moved to Coronado, CA, he attended school for a year. A new transfer moved his family to Norfolk, VA, where he lived and went to school until 1976. While in Norfolk John and his older brother cut grass to earn extra money. When they were age 12, they delivered morning papers for the Virginia Pilot. Up at 3:30 a.m., they had 200 customers between them. A couple of years later another brother joined them increasing their customer base to about 300 each day. They would get back home and eat all the left overs they could find in the refrigerator then go back to bed; getting up in time to go to school. The only day they did not deliver papers was Christmas. The family lived on tributary of Pretty Lake which was called Little Creek. The brothers enjoyed boating in their boat, crabbing and doing all the things young boys will do. It was a great place to live. Upon his father's retirement from the Navy his family settled in Vancouver, WA. John went to Evergreen High School and graduated in 1979. While in Virginia one summer John took a Welding Class at the Vocational Center there and found his vocation. He continued welding at Evergreen, became a Student Advisor on the board planning the new Vocational Center in Vancouver. After graduation he remained on the board as an advisor for a term of 5 years. While in High School John was hired by Middlewood Metal Manufacturing and remained there for several years. Eventually he worked for American Wood Dryers, a Manufacturing Company in Clackamas where he worked for 37 years. He loved the company he worked for, he loved the people and he loved his job. John strongly believed in Vocational Education. During his time in high school he and his friend John Aldrich would toss their gear into the back of the truck then camp and fish all weekend. What a wonderful time they both had. He also joined others in his teen years "Cruising Downtown"-down Main Street and back up Broadway to hang out at Dairy Queen. He drove a Dodge Cornet which later became a supped-up monster with a Hood Scoop. John played golf in AWGI work tournament and used his grandfather's old...very old golf set. People would laugh, however they worked. He taught himself to play the guitar and was fond of Stevie Ray Vaugh, Joe Bonamassa, BRMC and others. He loved Bow Hunting and his hunting buddy was Mitch Kilgore. John belonged to the Vancouver Pistol and Rifle Club and enjoyed hand gun competition. He also served as the Secretary of the Club. John loved to cook and was not afraid to try new and exciting recipes. In 1991 John took a trip to Juneau, AK, to visit his big brother Bob. It was a life altering trip. He agreed to go on a blind date with a friend of his sister-in-law and goodbye single life! He met the love of his life, Lynn Michelle Ott. Lynn quit her job in Juneau, loaded her possessions in her car and took the ferry down to the Lower 48. She stayed with John's parents and they married on the 21st of March, 1992. It was a beautiful day. They celebrated 30 years marriage this year. John is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 30 years, Lynn; his daughter, Elle of Portland; son, Mitchel (Jessica), of Salem; grandson, William; Jessica's son, Eli; and son, Benjamin of Vancouver; his older brother, Robert J. Barnett (Linda), of Kenai, AK; sister, Kacy M. Gramckow (Jerry), of Colorado Springs, CO; brother, James H. Barnett (Debbie), of Molalla, OR; and Joseph M. Barnett of Vancouver, WA; his parents, Robert J. Barnett and Sharon L. Hamilton Barnett of Vancouver; Lynn's parents, Larry Ott and Glenda Ott of Oroville, CA; her brother, Larry Jr. (Patti); brother, Lucky (Debbie); and brother, Loren (Erica);his uncle, James H. Hamilton (Romell); aunt, Jo Denise Coila (Loren); aunt,Tracy A. Dahlman (Robert); and many nieces and nephews. There will be a Memorial Service held for John William Barnett at 2:00 on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at: Brush Prairie Baptist Church located at 11814 N.E. 117th Avenue, Vancouver, WA. 360 892-4664.
