GEORGE TRUMAN DEARBORN February 3, 1926 ~ July 2, 2011 George Truman Dearborn died early Saturday morning on July 2, 2011. George passed away at the age of 85 in his home in Vancouver, Washington. He was born on February 3, 1926 in Park Rapids, Minnesota to Truman and Helen Dearborn. He lived in Park Rapids with his brothers Dan and Jim Dearborn and his sister Jewel Ramsey (Dearborn). George worked hard on the family farm and at the age of 17 he joined the United States Navy. He served as a Motor Machinist's Mate for four years and was honorably discharged as a Second Class Petty Officer on February 14, 1947. Through a mutual friend, he began written correspondence with his future wife, for whom he hitchhiked from Virginia to Washington to meet. At the end of his Navy career, George married Marianne Jenner of Vancouver, Washington on November 22, 1947 at the age of 21. George lived in Vancouver for the rest of his years. He worked at the Crown Zellerbach paper mill for 36 years as a Journeyman Electrician. He also owned and operated his own appliance repair company called Dearborn Appliance. George retired from work in 1979, but continued to assist his family and friends in several of their own repairs and projects. George was an avid community servant and lived to help others. He sponsored T-ball teams for the Evergreen Little League, the Camas Women's Bowling Team, and donated to many charities and organizations. He volunteered numerous hours to Habitat for Humanity, the Seaman's Center, and Friends of the Carpenter. He taught youth and adult bible classes, served as an assistant Boy Scout Master, and started the first Cub Scout Troop in Ellsworth. George enjoyed the church, outdoors, traveling, woodworking, volunteering, fishing, hunting, puzzles, reading, history, working in his garden, teaching, and spending time with his family and friends. George was a loving man of God that will truly be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy will live on for years and years to come in the knowledge and memories of his family and friends. George is survived by his wife Marianne; daughter Pam Chaffee and her husband Dave; son Chuck Dearborn and his wife Linda; daughter Rhonda Shaffer and her husband Steve; son John Dearborn and his wife Tammy; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother Dan Dearborn, brother Jim Dearborn and his wife Dolores; and and sister Jewel Ramsey and her husband Robert. George was preceded in death by his sister Dottie Lou Dearborn, his granddaughter Tara Dearborn, and his nephew Steve Dearborn. A Memorial Service will be held for George on Friday, July 8, at 1:00 p.mm at The First United Methodist Church at 33rd and Main Street in Vancouver, WA. Donations in honor of George may be made to the following: Habitat for Humanity, the Seaman's Center, Friends of the Carpenter, and the United Methodist Youth Group.
