Gene Louis Hollowell

GENE L. HOLLOWELL January 16, 1933 ~ December 7, 2015 Gene Louis Hollowell passed away on Dec. 7, 2015, surrounded by his family, under the care of Community Hospice Care Center in Salmon Creek/Vancouver, WA. He was born an only child to Vaughn and Hilda Hollowell in Grants Pass, OR on Jan. 16, 1933. His love of planes, trains and automobiles came at the early age of 8. He had a close relationship with his grandparents, whom he went to live with at age 13. This is also when he began his hard work that continued till the age of 81. He retired after 50 years as an Optician. While growing up in Grants Pass, OR, he made many lifelong friends. Gene lived in Grants Pass until he graduated from high school in 1952. He then joined the Air Force. His duty as Air Chief took him to Labrador, Newfoundland Base for the next four years. While on leave, he met and later married Edna Hutchinson. Together they had three daughters. In 1977, Gene married Delores Baldassarre. They have been married for 38 wonderful years. Gene and Delores enjoyed frequent trips to Grants Pass, train excursions, cruises, and car tours. Gene had many hobbies. His love of cars led him to join several antique car clubs such as, HACO, AACA, NAOC and The Flamingos. Gene's pride and joy, in addition to his family, was the 13-year restoration of his 1937 Oldsmobile which won best of show, including a national championship. It is 1 of 7 in existence. Gene is survived by his wife, Delores; step-son, Greg Baldassarre; three daughters, Donna Evans, Margie Ferderer (Gary) and Evonne Ferderer (Keith); and grandchildren, Jessica Hooper (Mike), Jared Loranger, Brandon and Chase Ferderer and Krista, Zachary and Jackson Ferderer. He was preceded in death by his parents. Viewing will be held on Thurs., Dec. 17th at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 NE 112th Ave., Vancouver, WA 98684 between the hours of noon and 9p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 8701 NE 119th St., Vancouver, WA 98662 at 11a.m. on Fri., Dec. 18th.
