Flores Eula Loy

"She was a loving and giving person who shall be missed." Flores Loy, 94, of Vancouver, WA, passed away on May 18, 2010. She was born to Ewell and Cora (McCamment) Ledford in St. Louis, MO. Her father was a First Lieutenant in the Army and took a demotion to Master Sergeant to be able to take a post with the 7th Infantry on the west coast and eventually settle at Vancouver Barracks. He served in the Spanish American War. This experience influenced her name Flores_-the Spanish word for "flowers." The family moved to Cougar, WA, to homestead. Flores attended school in the one room school at Cougar and eventually settled in Woodland, WA, where she lived until 1948 and where the family operated a gas and service station on "old highway 99." She graduated from Woodland High School and later from the Vancouver Business College. Flores Loy lived an interesting and active life as a girl in the 1920's and into the next century. She and her husband, Sanford, started life as newlyweds at House Rock Lookout working for the Forest Service. They packed in by mule and built a station/cabin that is still a dedicated and restored landmark by the Forest Service. When WW II was in full swing she drove truck out of Truck Dispatch in the Kaiser Shipyard. This dispatch delivered steel plates to create the war ships that welders and "Rosie the Riveter" made and launched from Kaiser. Her husband, Sanford, operated crane #2 on the quays that built the Carriers. After the flood of '48 they settled in Vancouver, WA. She worked at Eoff Electric for many years as a bookkeeper. She retired to enjoy grandchildren, gardening, quilting and sewing. She also raised lovely roses and Delphinium's and enjoyed volunteering at the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens in Woodland. Flores lived to see and enjoy her great-great-grandchildren and to create a wonderful quilt for each one. The family is truly grateful for the support of Flores' companion, Charles Ferguson, Ray Hickey House, Kaiser Hospice, especially, Paul Weinberg, Suzanne Hill and Dr. Louise Clark and the wonderful, caring staff at Wildwood Adult Care Facility-Judy, Belen and Paula. Flores is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Richard) Schwary; grandchildren, Kris (Robert) Hieronymus, Karin (Ron) Fakler, Kathleen (Malcom) McDonald and Stephen Schwary; great-grandchildren, Alicia (Mike) King, Heather (Dave) Kesmodel, Phillip Myers, Kala and Karly McDonald and Aidan Schwary; great-greatgrandchildren, Annalin and Samuel King and Kinder and Brooksley Kesmodel; sisters, Fern (Lou) Green, Juanita Bolton, Genenieve Churchill; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Sanford; and two sisters, June Gilbert and Betty O'Keefe.
