Delores M. Schmid

?Delores (Hausinger) Schmid passed away on January 2nd, 2021; family members were at her side. She is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, Howard Schmid, as well as her children Jane Schmid-Cook, Susan Schmid and husband, Roland Peruch, David and Kathie Schmid. Five beloved grandchildren: Grace, Allegra, Katherine, Audrey, and Wyatt. ?The youngest of eleven children, Delores was born in Hood River, Oregon, later settling in Vancouver where she graduated from Fort Vancouver High School. She later married Howard at the Saint James Cathedral in downtown Vancouver. ?Delores was a devoted mother and grandmother; she went out of her way to create a household where her children and grandchildren would always know they were welcome and loved. She was incredibly playful and inventive, coming up with games and projects for her grandkids to keep them entertained year around. As they grew up, she could always be found in the audiences of plays, band concerts, and sports events. When her children were young Delores would assist with 4H competitions and horse shows at the Clark County Fair. ?Her grandchildren will always remember how willing Delores was to play, to make up stories, and to sit down at the kitchen table for art projects. At night she held elaborate tea parties complete with fresh popcorn, cookies, and movies. ?During her life, Delores was many things in addition to a wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an accomplished artist and musician, a mentor, and an enthusiastic event planner. She could drive a semi-truck, back up horse trailer, and do it all in high heels. She could whistle like a bird, and kept an abundant vegetable and flower garden. ?An avid traveler, Delores explored North America, parts of Europe, and Australia with Howard, friends, and family. They could often be found boating on the Columbia River and in the San Juan Islands during the summer. Delores was also an animal lover. Many pets lived in the Schmid house throughout her life, including a racoon named Zorro. All creatures were worthy of love and affection in her eyes. She will be dearly missed by friends and family, but her adventures and stories will live on in those who loved her the most.
