David Hoyt Wilcox

David Hoyt Wilcox passed away March 26, 2019 after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was born February 10, 1947 in Springfield, Massachusetts to father Hoyt Hollister Wilcox and mother Janet Frew Wilcox. As a child he lived in Connecticut, Georgia and California but spent most of his adult life in Washington State. David will always be remembered for his cheerful personality, big smile, and caring nature. He served in the U. S. Air Force during the Viet Nam era and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sargent in 1969. After his military service, David received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of the Pacific in 1974, and earned his Professional Engineering (P.E.) designation in 1978. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers. Always eager to learn and develop his skills, David's engineering career was quite varied. He practiced Nuclear Engineering at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, as a Nuclear Test Engineer; Computer Engineering at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington, as Engineering Manager in the International Products Group; Electrical Engineering at both Puget Sound Energy in Bellevue, Washington, and at HDR Engineering in Portland, Oregon, where he was Manager of the Transmission Design Section. Although retired, he continued to expand his engineering skills by joining a start-up company to design large solar plants. David was passionate about nature and all its wonders. Early in life, the stars held his heart, so he designed and built his own telescope. As a young adult, David earned a pilot's license and then went on to become a licensed flight instructor. He loved flying all types of aircraft but was especially fond of gliders; planes supported in flight by the dynamic reaction of the air against its lifting surfaces, and whose free flight does not depend on an engine. Later in life, David became a boating enthusiast and owned several boats over the years. His favorite destination was the San Juan Islands and took many memorable trips there with family and friends. David was married to Verna Worthington Wilcox for 37 years. He is survived by his wife Verna, daughters Maryanne Eynon, Dawn Kormanyos, Julie Eynon-Winter (Daniel), JoAnn Hindmarsh Wilcox (Jay), Linda Eynon (William), eight grandchildren, brother John L. Wilcox, and several nieces and nephews. His brother Donald H. Wilcox preceded him in death. A special thanks to the Ray Hickey Hospice House staff for their care during David's final hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ray Hickey Hospice. Internment will be at 10:30 AM on April 5, 2019 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
