Darlene R Hoard

Darlene Rose Hoard (Paynter) passed away in her home surrounded by family, in Woodland, WA, on May 27, 2023. Darlene was born April 21, 1935 in Vancouver, Washington to Charles and Valetta Paynter. She graduated from Vancouver High School in 1953. She married Charles (Chuck) Hoard, the love of her life in August 1953. They lived many places including Anchorage, Alaska and Berlin, Germany, as Chuck served in the United States Air Force in Special Intelligence. They welcomed their son, Darrell Hoard in September 1954 and adopted their daughter Belinda Walker (Hoard) in August of 1965 while stationed in San Antonio, Texas. Darlene was a military wife while Chuck served for 24 years. She meticulously maintained the household and the raising of their children. During this time, she also worked at Nabisco. After Chuck retired from the military, Darlene and Chuck purchased Dougherty Hardware in Connell, Washington. She was in charge of the accounting and banking. In 1994 she became co-owner of Sunshine Tree Service and Darlene managed administrative services until retirement in 2008. Darlene found enjoyment in a wide variety of activities. She loved gardening, cooking, crocheting, sewing, and playing games. She was an avid bowler - bowling in both couples and women's leagues over the years. She participated in many national bowling tournaments. She also loved life on the Washington and Oregon coast and Hood Canal and spent time camping, digging for clams, fishing, and gathering a limit of oysters. She never turned down a trip to the beach, rain or shine. She was a wonderful wife, parent and grandparent. Darlene was married to Chuck for 55 years before he passed away in 2008. Darlene developed strong relationships with her kids and many of their friends. She loved her kids' and grandkids' friends as if they were her own. In fact, many only know her as "Mama" or "Grandma". Darlene was loved dearly. You could always count on Darlene for a large dose of fun and sass. She was strong, independent, generous and loved to adventure. She was also stubborn, which proved to be in her favor when given a terminal diagnosis in May of 2022 and a timeline of only 2-3 months. Not even that would stop her from meeting her newest great granddaughter and throwing in a few more adventures, including a trip to Disneyland! She lived right up until the end with determination and love. Darlene is preceded in death by her husband Charles (Chuck) Hoard, her son Darrell Hoard, and her great grandson Carson Panick.She is survived by her daughter Belinda Walker (Hoard); her son in law Timothy Walker; her grandchildren Chrishell Hutchings (Hoard), Austin Walker, Kiana Panick (Walker); and her great grandchildren, Ashlee Bischel (Williams), Cole Williams, Maddison Santos, Josuah Santos, Laylah Walker and Hazel Panick. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens on Monday June 5, 2023 at 11:30 am. Flowers are welcomed to be sent to Evergreen Memorial Gardens 1101 NE 112th St Vancouver, WA 98684.
